Giving Veterans Their Due – Securing The Present & Future of Our Heroes
Not everyone has the courage to see war, put their life at risk, and be on active duty. It takes a special brand of patriotism and valor to willingly serve your country with your life.
Active duty army, navy, and air force personnel take grave risks day in and out. Despite giving their all to their nation, it is rather heartbreaking to see that they don’t get the support our government owes them once they retire.
As a veteran United States Air Force pilot who got deployed to Vietnam from 1965 to 1966, I have experienced and seen first-hand the struggles veterans face when returning to life after duty.
Among U.S. veterans who use VA health care, 23% struggle with PTSD. Moreover, 1 in 3 women veterans reports experiencing military sexual trauma when on active duty.
The veterans deserve better treatment and resources to help them slowly get back to everyday life after serving in the armed forces. They should not have to struggle to get jobs. Instead, they deserve to have a smooth transition from being armed force personnel to becoming a civilian.
To say that I take veteran health, livelihood, and rehabilitation into everyday life seriously is an understatement. I want to do everything in my power as the future President of the U.S. to honor and support our veterans and their families with a strong veterans policy.
My Veterans Policy
Our veterans are incredibly strong, healthy, capable, and wise people. They are our heroes, and it is unto us to support them. My veterans’ policy will focus on the following deliverables:
Unquestionable central support for veterans
Focus on veterans' education and rehabilitation in society
Strengthen VA healthcare so no veteran has to think twice before seeking mental and physical wellbeing
Guidance and multi-faceted resources for veterans and their families
Avenues for veterans insurance
Development of veteran nursing homes
Workforce training initiatives for veterans and their spouses
Scholarships for disabled veterans to attain higher education
Active resources for suicide prevention in veterans
Create infrastructure and housing support programs for former armed forces communities
As part of my veterans’ policy, I want to create more job avenues for veterans to ensure they don’t have to rely on charity, face homelessness, or earn minimum wages after retiring from service. I also aim to create more local safe spaces where veterans and their families can get the resources they need to take care of themselves as they age.
By dedicating more funds to veterans and their needs, I want to expand veterans’ career growth, train them for new jobs, focus on their mental and physical health, and help them complete higher education. I also want to dedicate programs for veteran suicide prevention. Our heroes deserve to be treated with the utmost respect, and I want to put them in esteemed positions where their stories can inspire young children as they continue to serve the community in whatever capacity they can.
